Questions, answered.
Adopting, fostering, volunteering, giving — the things people ask us most.
How do I adopt an animal?
Start by submitting an inquiry through our contact form or Facebook page. From there it’s four steps: application, a home check, a meet & greet, and welcome home — where you sign the adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee. We cover all necessary medical care beforehand.
How much is the adoption fee?
It varies by animal and helps offset the medical care we provide before placement (spay/neuter, vaccines, and any treatment the animal needed). Reach out about a specific animal and we’ll give you the details.
Can I foster instead of adopt?
Yes — and it’s a huge help. Foster homes give an animal a temporary place to land and free up space for the next one in need. We coordinate veterinary care and provide guidance; you provide the couch and the patience.
Do you have a physical shelter I can visit?
We’re a farm sanctuary, not a storefront, and we’re entirely volunteer-run with no office. Visits and pickups are arranged by appointment — reach out and we’ll set up a time.
What kinds of animals do you take in?
Dogs, cats, horses, and other farm animals — often the ones overwhelmed shelters can’t keep, including older, sick, or hard-to-place animals. Some get adopted; some live out their lives here as permanent residents.
I found a stray or injured animal. Can you take it?
Call local animal control first — they have the resources and authority to respond fast, especially in an emergency. We’re a small volunteer team, often at capacity, but reach out and we’ll do what we can. We’ve never ignored a message about an animal in trouble.
How can I volunteer?
We’d love to have you. Volunteers must be 18 or older (16 with a parent or guardian present), and we have roles for all availability levels — from daily morning care shifts to one-time transport runs to monthly property work. Read more and apply on our volunteer page. We respond to every inquiry.
Where does my donation go?
Straight to the animals. There are no paid staff and no office — every dollar buys food, covers a vet bill, or funds the upkeep of the sanctuary. Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
How can I donate?
Through Zeffy (our secure online giving platform) or by mailing a check to PO Box 25413, Yuma, AZ 85367.
Are you a registered nonprofit?
Yes. Saint Francis Rescue and Sanctuary of Yuma is a registered 501(c)(3) (EIN 99-0599742). We ran privately for twelve years before formalizing in 2024.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. Saint Francis Rescue and Sanctuary of Yuma is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 99-0599742). Donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. We'll send a receipt for your records.
How much of my donation actually reaches the animals?
100% of it. There are no paid staff and no office costs. Every dollar covers food, vet bills, medications, farrier visits, and the ongoing build-out of the sanctuary. We're run entirely by volunteers who believe that animal care is what the money is for.
Can I donate in memory or honor of a person or pet?
Absolutely — and it means a great deal to us. Send a note when you donate and we'll acknowledge the dedication. Many families have made memorial gifts in honor of a beloved animal; we treat those with special care.
